“The Three Graces”—St. Petersburg Baroque for distinguished gentlemen
One of my goals is to shoot all the iconic projects and locations in the cities where Whitewill sells real estate. Through photo stories, I try to capture the atmosphere and architectural details of these locations to help our clients find the right place to live or invest.
Last week, I stopped by one of the most beautiful buildings in St. Petersburg. It’s “The Three Graces,” across from Tavrichesky Garden. The name comes from the three female figures on the building’s corner tower. These ancient goddesses of beauty and grace have become the building’s symbol.
Architect Van der Gycht created an elegant, almost theatrical building in the Neo-Baroque style. The facades are richly decorated with caryatids and atlantes, garlands, vases, and risalits. It’s lavish.
Huge floor-to-ceiling windows overlook Tavrichesky Garden and offer views of Smolny Cathedral and the Manege. Wrought-iron grilles, stucco moldings on the walls and ceilings, and tiled stoves. The building was clearly constructed as a statement of wealth and status.
Before the revolution, spacious apartments here were rented by deputies, senators, high-ranking officers of the Russian Empire, and diplomats. It was a home for the political and military elite of early 20th-century St. Petersburg.
The apartments range in size from 200 to 500 square meters. True luxury for high society. The revolution made everyone equal. The luxurious apartments were turned into communal apartments. The building survived the Siege of Leningrad, Soviet life, and the 1990s.
Today, the developer Eurostroy has restored it to its former glory. The complex features 22 residences ranging in size from 210 to 519 square meters. Prices for apartments in this building start at ₽415 million.
