“Futurist”—St. Petersburg Art Deco
One of my goals is to shoot all the iconic projects and locations in the cities where Whitewill sells real estate. Through photo stories, I try to capture the atmosphere and architectural details of these locations to help our clients find the right place to live or invest.
On the Petrograd Side, there is a building where 1930s architecture meets modernity. We are on Barochnaya Street, near Krestovsky and Petrovsky Islands. Here, RBI has built the “Futurist” residential complex.
It consists of seven intimate buildings ranging from five to nine stories in height. The complex was completed in 2022. Inside, there are 200 apartments ranging in size from 50 to 200 m².
The project was designed by Evgeny Gerasimov, a well-known architect in the city. He blended Art Deco with the Constructivist style of a Soviet bread factory. The developer restored the bread factory itself and transformed it into a cultural and business space.
Fifteen thousand meters of Jurassic marble were used to clad the facades of the residential complex. The stone is 150 million years old. On the slabs directly on the facade, you can see imprints of ancient mollusks from the time of the dinosaurs.
The facades now feature concrete rosettes, bronze details, and metal grilles shaped like ears of wheat. This is a nod to the history of the flour mill. The design of the ears of wheat was created by sculptor Vlad Manachinsky.
The window frames are made of oak. On the outside, they are graphite-colored, while on the inside they are coated with a clear matte varnish that preserves the wood grain. The upper floors feature apartments with skylights and private terraces.
The private courtyard features pine trees, willows, maples, apple trees, firs, hydrangeas, and Virginia creeper. The playgrounds were manufactured by the German company Richter Spielgeräte. Similar ones are installed in Novaya Hollandia.
Residents have access to a club lounge, a meeting room, a massage room, a yoga studio, and a small fitness area.
Prices per square meter start at 640,000₽ and go up to 1 million₽ for fully finished apartments. The Whitewill team in St. Petersburg has some excellent options in this residential complex.
To me, “Futurist” is a prime example of how to build in a historic center. It’s about not pretending to be an old building, but creating something new with respect for history.
